The community lies within the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik/ First Nations, where Southern Tutchone people have resided for thousands of years.
Just two hours (154 km) from Whitehorse, the community of Haines Junction is located at the junction of the Alaska and Haines Highways and has a population of approximately 909. Census results for the Village of Haines Junction identify Indigenous people at 40 percent of the population. In general, the catchment area for Haines Junctions includes the Alaska Highway north to km 1630.4 (Christmas Creek), south to km 1518.4 (Champagne) and the Haines Highway west to km 102.2 (Summit), making up an additional population of 273.
